I’ve got news for you if you think get away from cliques after high school you can forget that. Loser there equals loser in life. Bullies are just replaced by Mgmt and faves. If you are no one you’ll remain that way.

Okay, this was the exact point I started shipping Charles Carson and Elsie Hughes. Series 1, Episode 1. Mrs. Hughes asking Mr. Carson “Do you ever wish you’d gone another way?” Yep! That was it….I was gone ;)
I started shipping because of the look she gives him when he says “They’re all the family I’ve got!” and then his quick contrite expression and apology. That whole exchange just screamed to me that they either had been, thought about being, or were in a relationship.
Funny because before that moment (the whole 10 minutes or so), I was determined not to ship them because of the association with Remains of the Day.
(I maintain that their relationship is completely and utterly unlike the one between Mr. Stevens and Miss Kenton, but that’s a discussion for another post.)
I kind of like the parallel only in that if Stevens was like Carson and has his housekeeper open up to him she would never have left the house.
Still love both couples immensely.
I guess that the thing about Carson is that he might be a little stiff and formal, but he is not completely socially inept. It might take him a little while to get it, but he does whereas poor Mr. Stevens just doesn’t really. Poor guy.
For example, Carson apologized to Bates, he recognized that Mrs. Patmore was having problems and dealt with it with sensitivity (‘in your own time and your own way, tell me’), he felt for William’s loss.
By the way, I love both couples too, but unfortunately I don’t think that Stevens/Kenton ever had a chance. Charles and Elsie still do, and I really need to write some fanfic.
If you are ever bored and need some ROTD fic let me know. There’s a woman I know over at LJ who wrote some of the best fics for ROTD ever. I always think of them as Steven’s redeems himself fics. LOL
And I agree about Charles. It takes him a bit but he does get there.

- dude with his leg in a cast crowd surfing, each crutch not far behind

- even super far, far, far away Gavin Rossdale & Chris Cornell and their hair do things to my nether regions
- hearing Machinehead, Rooster and Outshined sure took me back to my twenties
That was a lot of fun and a very good anniversary gift for me and Mr CMT.
